Description:
Chaga is a non-toxic mushroom and is one of the foods highest in antioxidants. This tree mushroom grows on living trees unlike other tree mushrooms, which grow on dead trees, draw its nutrients and derive its extracts from the tree it grows on. Chaga grows wild in cold northern climates and cannot be grown artificially. Although Chaga has been used for medicinal purposes for at least several hundred years in Russia and Eastern Europe, it has been little known in America. Chaga has to grow at least 5 years before harvest, which makes it hard for commercial mass production. Chaga looks like burnt wood or charcoal on the outside but appears to be orange inside.

Throughout the centuries, people in Asia and Siberia have traditionally taken chaga to:
  • boost energy
  • support the immune system
  • increase the body's resistance to stress
  • improve digestion
  • detoxify the body
Although largely ignored in the western world for hundreds of years, Chaga is currently re-emerging as one of the most powerful antioxidants and adaptogens in its class. Chaga, once called Nature's Silver bullet, happens to be one of the most powerful antioxidants known to Nature. Based on laboratory testing, Chaga is much more potent in its capacity to wipe out free radicals than the Açaí berry. Chaga is also an adaptogen, meaning that it increases your body's resistance to stress - both mental and physical.

    Chaga constituents include:
  • Polysaccharides that enhance the immune system
  • Betulinic acid
  • Triterpenes
  • Germanium (a free-radical scavenger)
  • Other nucleosides, phytonutrients, minerals, and amino acids including saponin, magnesium, chromium, iron, kalium, beta-glucan, inotodiol, isoprenoid, and others.

Composition of Chaga

Betulinic Acid
The most valued property in Chaga is betulinic acid. Betulin, naturally present in birch bark, is cytotoxic and triggers apoptosis through a direct effect on the mitochondria of cancer cells, making cancer cells kill themselves. However, betulin in its natural form cannot be absorbed in human body. Chaga mushrooms harvested from birch trees convert the betulin in the bark into a soluble and ingestible form of betulinic acid.

Beta-glucan
Like many medicinal mushrooms, Chaga is rich in beta-glucans, which perform immunomodulating activities. Since cancer cells consist of our own body cells, the immune system does not attack them but allows them to keep growing. Beta-glucans bind to Complement Receptor 3 (CR3) that allows the immune cells to recognize cancer cells as "foreigner", and makes them attack the cancer cells.

Additional benefits, including antioxidants
In addition to being used as an immune-booster, Chaga has demonstrated antibacterial, anti-malarial, anti-inflammatory and anthelmintic properties. It is also antiviral, antifungal, antimicrobial and anti-Candida. Chaga also has the highest level of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and is very high in antioxidants.

Clinically proven benefits of Chaga
Several research studies have been recently conducted, revealing many benefits of medicinal mushrooms including Chaga. The medicinal mushrooms with antioxidant phytochemicals have been reported to play important roles similar to other antioxidative vitamins such as ascorbic acid, carotenoids, and tocopherols. Chaga has been shown to have the highest antioxidant capacity among the mushrooms , especially in Superoxideanion scavenging.

How to make Canadian Chaga Tea
Steep/brew a teaspoon of ground Chaga (3g) in a cup of water (250 ml) for 4 to 6 minutes. Ground Canadian Chaga Tea is suitable for use with tea infusers and also conventional coffee makers.
